The Smell: Let’s Address the Sulphur in the Room
Yes, Rotorua has an iconic scent – it’s all part of our renowned geothermal charm! That “rotten egg” smell is simply hydrogen sulphide gas escaping from deep within the earth’s crust. While it might catch you off guard when you first arrive, most visitors tell us they stop noticing it within minutes.
Our team at Polynesian Spa often hears guests say, “I thought it would be much worse!” Truth is, the intensity varies depending on weather conditions and which part of town you’re in. Near our lakeside location, the natural scent mingles with the fresh air off Lake Rotorua, creating a much milder experience than what you might have read about online.
And here’s our little secret – once you’ve submerged in our mineral-rich pools, watching steam drift across the water’s surface, that distinctive aroma becomes part of the authentic experience that you’ll fondly remember long after your visit.

Why Soak in Sulphur? The Benefits Are Real
That very same sulphur that gives Rotorua its signature smell is actually what makes our waters so therapeutic. The acidic waters of our Priest Spring work wonders on tired muscles and joints, while our alkaline waters from the Rachel Spring are fantastic for nourishing skin and leaving your complexion glowing. The minerals help draw impurities from your body while improving circulation, and there’s something about floating in geothermally heated mineral water that melts tension away. Many of our regular visitors specifically seek out our sulphur-rich pools – what might seem unusual at first is actually what makes Polynesian Spa’s waters some of the most beneficial in the world.
The Practical Guide: What to Know Before You Go
What to Pack
When planning your visit to Polynesian Spa, bring swimming gear, a water bottle to stay hydrated, and flip flops (or jandals as we call them in New Zealand) for walking between pools. While we provide towels in our Deluxe Lake Spa and Lake View Private Pools, some guests prefer bringing an extra one, along with a bag for wet swimwear afterwards. We have towels and swimsuits for hire or sale so don’t stress if you forget to bring yours along. Our changing rooms have showers and amenities for rinsing off after your soak.
We often get asked if the thermal water or sulphur pools will damage or discolour swimwear, but that’s not the case and you don’t need to worry – our pools have the same impact on wear and tear as any other regular chlorinated pools. After you’ve enjoyed a swim, simply rinse out your swimsuit in cold water and mild detergent afterwards to remove any residue. However, be sure to remove any jewellery before bathing (especially silver) as the mineral-rich water will discolour your precious items.
Remember to take regular water breaks between soaks, especially from the hotter pools and don’t hesitate to ask our team questions – we love sharing our knowledge about our geothermal waters.
New Zealand Spa Etiquette
We offer a unique blend of relaxation and social interaction, with our hot pools acting as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, fostering new friendships and shared experiences. We encourage this but ask guests to be considerate of others seeking relaxation by keeping their voices down, connecting with nature and their surrounds by staying off devices or wearing wireless earbuds.
Best Times to Visit
For the most peaceful experience, try visiting on weekday mornings. Early mornings offer breathtaking sunrise views across the lake, while winter evenings provide something magical as steam swirls around you on a crisp night. Seasonal visitors might appreciate autumn and spring for their perfect temperatures and fewer crowds.
Many guests arrive a bit uncertain about “the smell,” but leave completely enchanted by Rotorua’s unique geothermal environment.
Our slice of paradise on the shores of Lake Rotorua has been helping people unwind and recharge for over 130 years. The acidic and alkaline waters, the rising steam, our signature mud wrap and Aix water jet treatments, and yes, even that distinctive aroma are all part of what makes Polynesian Spa such a unique experience that engages all your senses in the most wonderful way.
