Major Redevelopment at Spa Completed

Rotorua’s thermal bathing icon, Polynesian Spa, completed a $4m redevelopment in December 2007. The development, comprising three new adult cascading pools, thirteen new private pools, new adult changing rooms, a new group tour entrance, a new car park and remodelled entrance foyer was officially opened by the Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Damien O’Connor in February 2008.

Polynesian Spa Managing Director Martin Lobb says “The latest investment we have made underlines our commitment to the future of tourism in Rotorua and our commitment to provide world class spa facilities to our domestic and international visitors.”

The spa incorporated the latest technology into the design of the geothermal water reticulation plant. “Computerised temperature control, filtration and water sanitising mean that we are making the most efficient use of our limited geothermal water resource” says Martin Lobb.

The three new adult pools and new changing rooms have created expanded capacity for public bathing which is especially beneficial for clients using the spa at peak times in the high season and on public holidays. The new group tour entrance is used daily at the peak time between 4pm and 7pm and allows tour groups separate, exclusive access to the spa. “This has the double benefit of keeping the time-poor tour groups happy as well as allowing FIT visitors a more relaxing introduction to Polynesian Spa” says Martin Lobb.

The new deluxe private pools overlooking Lake Rotorua have proved particularly popular for visitors, and the standard private pools have an identical layout as the deluxe pools without the view. The small, rock-lined pools have private changing rooms with under-floor heating, and are filled with hot mineral water at a controlled 39C.

The foyer remodelling has allowed for a more modern and impressive entry to the spa and incorporates a new store display window that highlights the beautiful spa products that are sold in the Spa Essentials gift store.

Polynesian Spa now offers twenty six different hot mineral bathing pools. Its Lake Spa Retreat offers unique spa therapies based on Rotorua’s renowned geothermal resource and natural New Zealand products.

Managing Director Martin Lobb says “We regularly exceed our visitors expectation of our facilities as the entrance to the spa gives away little as to what lies within.”
